Dr. David Gottlieb shares his experience and observations of "The Journey Home".
First thing was The Josiah Wedgwood and then PalYam and Machal. Once we really got into the clandestine Aliya Bet (illegal immigration) we began to ask the question; How was it possible for the Holocaust to go on for years under the eyes of the entire world? Where were the WW II allies- why did they not intervene? But once we began to dig deeper into Pal Yam and Machal, we discovered that though nations were looking the other way hundreds of individuals and many non-governmental organizations such as the Red Cross, Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization and the United Jewish Appeal were getting involved. And, not only Jews but others from all parts of Europe and North America. In Italy the partisans who resisted and brought down Fascist Italy became the organization that renovated dozens of old ships so they would be able to transport survivors to Palestine. In doing so they were risking arrest because of pressure being placed on the new Italian government by the British who held the mandate for prohibiting Jewish refugees from entering their Jewish Homeland. Other men and women traveled to the Displaced Person Camps that now were filled with Holocaust survivors who were in dire need of medical and nutritional care. Reality is that it was not until the allied armies of America and Great Britain liberated the death camps of Dachau , Auschwitz Bergen did the world learn for the first time how horrendous and extensive was this network and well organized and managed machine of murder. Yet despite the evidence of photos and newsreels there remains thousands of deniers even among the German people- though more recent research has uncovered forced labor camps and factories in most every section of Germany as well as a revised death toll of millions more.
From all of our research and reading we came to the conclusion that The Journey Home would not have succeeded without The Actions of ONE.
The Actions of ONE would like to thank the following for believing in our mission and the message found in the story of The Journey Home.
